Emergo by ULs Human Factors Research & Design (HFR&D) team is a global Human Factors Engineering (HFE) consultancy with offices in Concord, MA; Chicago, IL; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Cambridge, United Kingdom; and Tokyo, Japan. The staff consists of over 60 human factors professionals with degrees in disciplines such as human factors, engineering, psychology, and industrial design.

Emergo by ULs HFR&D team is an industry leader in providing user research, design support, usability testing, analysis and human factors training services to its clients. Many leading medical device and health product manufacturers rely upon our services to produce safe and satisfying products. Our work involves research, design, and evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic devices as well as information management systems. Our research and design portfolio includes products and systems such as hemodialysis machines, glucose meters, insulin pumps, heart pumps, nerve stimulators, inhalers, defibrillators, X-ray systems, and multiple surgical tools. Our portfolio also includes non-medical products such as consumer products, automotive diagnostic tools, and software applications.



We are searching for a UX/UI Specialist who is ready to harness her or his creativity, experience, and a user-centered design process to produce safe, effective, andsatisfying designs. The successful candidate will be a broadly creative individual with a strong product design portfolio who wants to serve in a high-energy, supporting role on an extraordinary team. You should be a team player, and a \"natural consultant\" who possesses diverse technical skills, enjoys meeting new people and feels comfortable multi-tasking.

As part of our team, you will initially focus on a 12 to 18 month project designing the user interface for a web-based enterprise software product for medical device market compliance. During this project you will:

  • Develop user interface feature sets on a rolling schedule with product owners in an Agile-inspired environment
  • Guide developers in usability best practices and GUI standards.
  • Develop final artwork (e.g., buttons, icons, illustrations) for software user interfaces and potentially learning aids.
  • Support the creation of interactive prototypes to present and support usability tests of user interface design concepts.
  • Ensure that a consistent and cohesive user experience is maintained throughout project execution.
  • Help development teams troubleshoot and fix UI problems.
  • As a secondary focus, you may also engage in additional development of safe, effective, and appealing user interface designs across various digital platforms, including other web-based software, as well as device-embedded software and mobile applications. In addition to the activities listed above, you might engage in activities such as:

  • Working with senior design team members to develop conceptual design concepts and instantiate design concepts in the form of detailed screen designs
  • Designing printed learning aids (e.g., user manuals, quick reference cards, training animations).
  • Producing style guides.
  • In partnership with research colleagues, support requirements creation by analyzing target audience, objectives, user needs, and business needs.
  • Developing use scenarios, navigational structures, sitemaps, user/task flows, wireframes and visual assets.
  • Supporting senior design team members to help create detailed proposals, project cost estimates, plans, and schedules.
  • Supporting design reviews, style guideline development, and presentations on style standards and UX conventions.
  • In partnership with research colleagues, supporting UX research including usability testing.
  • Traveling within the USA and abroad (mostly Europe) to meet clients and present designs.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in interaction design, visual design, graphic design, or a related field.
  • Strong conceptual and visual design skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proficiency in English.
  • Skilled in design tools including Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe Illustrator, and wireframing/prototyping tools including Sketch, InVision, or Figma.
  • Experience conceptualizing and/or designing software user interfaces is required and hardware user interfaces and/or instructional documents a plus.
  • Experience creating interactive prototypes in HTML is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript a plus.
